N U M E R O L O G Y FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions)

Is 0 a number? If so, what does it stand for ?
Some say it is a number, some that it is not, that it is literally no-number. Zero, also known as the lens, has been regarded as the primary symbol of God, designating perfection, the history of all that has gone before, and the seeds of all that is to come. Everybody has an aspect of the 0 within them and can access it if they know how.

There are so many numerology systems.
Which is the right one?
There is no single 'right' system of numerology. Each system builds upon, or is influenced to some degree, by systems that preceded it and each makes a contribution to the sum of knowledge and insight. Some systems, however, are less adaptable than others, and many lose some relevance with the passing of time. In the West, systems developed from Pythagoras tend to have particular relevance because of their European roots and the intellectual rigour that sat alongside the opening of intuition. It should be noted as well, that Pythagoras travelled widely and his work showed influences of esoteric wisdom found in Persia, the Middle East and India.

How does numerology correspond to tarot, astrology, chakras etc.?
Astrology and Tarot depend absolutely upon numbers and Numerology. astrology starts with the date of birth which involves measurement in numbers in relation to the planets, each of which also has its own number!
With Tarot, we have a similar story. Look at any pack of Tarot cards. Each card of the major arcana carries a number from 0 to 22, and the four suits of the minor arcana are numbered 1 to 10, so any serious reading of the cards should take account of the numbers that go with them.
there are differentways of relating numbers to Chakras but the overall movement between top and bottom is usually seen in a figure of '8', sumbolising the human being as the great conduit for the novement of spirit into matter and back again.

Why do numbers have the qualities they do? Who decided this?
First, there is no universal agreement on the qualities of the numbers. This relates back to question 2 about which system of numbers is 'right'.
When we consider numbers ayt te level of psychology or nature, qualities can be broadly agreed upon, e.g. in the western tradition, number 4 is associated with endurance, will, reliability etc. but at a more esoteric level it would habve no such concrete qualities attached to it in this way.
The psychological understanding of numbers 1-9 is determined by the archetypes that stand behind them and most people recognise themselves in terms of these archetypes when explained through the numbers in their dates of birth and names. A useful exercise can be to draw anumber on a sheet of paper and meditate upon it, see what it says to you. You may be surprised at what you get.

What influence did Pythagoras have on Numerology?
Pythagoras arguably made the greatest individual contribution to the development of numerology in the West. after many years of research, he established his School of Mysteries where the study of number, astronomy (which then included astrology) and geometry (including sacred geometry) were at the heart of the curriculum. because his approach was eclectic, the Pythagorean legacy embraces wisdom from a spectrum of sources that were presented in a way that would appeal to the emergent scientific mind. Almost every contemporary western treatment of Numerology owes something to Pythagoras.
